Strand
An Odyssey of Pacific Ocean Debris
Readers may be interested in these photos collected during my research for writing Strand.
From Chapter One: Gomi
At left is the glass fishing float. Below left is a scene from the Beachcomber Fun Fair in Ocean Shores, and below right is Dale Chihuly's Niijima Night Floats installation displayed on the stone wave at the Tacoma Art Museum.

From Chapter Two: COMU
At near right, a dead common murre in the wrack line on Mile 157; at far right, Val and Diane at Baker Beach, north of Florence, measuring a beached bird for their monthly COASST survey.
From Chapter Three: Havoc, Size 11
At left, the Reebok and Converse I found together on Labor Day 2000. Both shoes likely were shipped to North America aboard the APL China, seen below left, at the Port of Seattle after its disaster at sea. The Reebok was made in 1989 at Kong Tai Shoes in Shenzhen, China, seen below right in a 1991 photo.

From Chapter Four: Flight of the Minke
At near right, a photo biologist Tamara McGuire took of the minke the day she investigated the stranded whale. At far right, all that was left of it six months later were some scattered, bleached bones on the beach.
 From Chapter Five: The Sanak
At near right, a view of the Sanak's remains on the September day when we first found them. At far right, what we could see of the Sanak three and a half years later, following a stormy winter.
Below, the Sanak at sea in her glory days.

 From Chapter Six: Mermaid's Purse
At near right is the big skate egg case we found; note the large yolks and the glimpse of an embryo in the lower right. At far right is a baby big skate in a tank at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
